Riverside girls roll, Dorman boys squeak by to take 5A titles

At the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia, the Riverside girls, No. 27 in the latest DyeStat rankings, scored 63 points to win the South Carolina 5A cross country championship Saturday. The young Riverside squad was led by sophomore Jessie Crowley's sixth-place finish. 

Individually, freshman Katie Pou of Nation Ford won the 5A title in 18:31, edging out fellow freshman Sydney George of Fort Mill (18:50). 

In boys 5A, Dorman's Wynn Johnson ran 15:38 to win as his team barely won the team title with 87 points, edging Riverside (88).

In 4A girls, sophomore Mari Cagle Lockhart ran 18:13 for the fastest time of the day and teammate Ally Wilson was right behind in 18:23 as the duo guided Daniel to a state title. 

The 4A boys race was claimed by Sam Gilman of Hilton Head (15:36). His team also won the title with 61 points.  

Freshman Maggie Rhodes of Woodruff won the 3A girls race in 19:20, while junior Sam Boykin of Bishop England claimed the boys title in 16:36. Waccamaw dominated, winning both the girls and boys team championships.

In girls 2A/1A, sophomore  Ava Dobson guided St. Josephs to a team championship as she won in 18:35. St. Josephs placed five runners in the 10. 

Colin Baker of Academic Magnet (15:54) won the 2A title, while St. Josephs won the boys crown.

In 1A, junior Brendan McMananmon of Governor's School guided his team to a state title as he won the individual race in 16:13.
